Condemned to repeat only the final words of others, Echo has no speech of her own. She wastes away until, in Ovid’s telling, her bones turn to stone and nothing remains of her but a voice. The Last Word begins from this disappearance to ask what remains when language withdraws: a breath, a murmur, a resonance.
These photomontages compose illusory landscapes. Layers stack up like strata of memory, and the mountain, the woods and the water become surfaces of echo, where the image doubles, holds back, fades. They are not places to inhabit but thresholds, spaces of consciousness where words have no place.
The 4K videos offer the viewer a meditative experience. They set up a suspended, sound-filled time. Breathless runs through the grass answer the almost imperceptible movement of nature: slowed-down wind, streams of water, petals drifting slowly across the surface of a fountain. Duration expands into deep listening. The rhythm of images and sounds matches that of breathing, the viewer’s own. It is less a matter of looking than of attuning oneself to a meditative breath, in which attention relaxes and tightens at once.
The work unfolds in three parts, the mountain, the woods and the water, which replay the three places of the myth: the stone where the voice endures, the cover where one withdraws, the mirror where one is lost. Each offers an experience of active meditation, in which silence is not an absence but a material, and the last word remains open.
